This is a revival of Mull Theatre’s hit show, which played at the Lyceum in 1998 and Perth Theatre in 1999. Whisky Galore is performed as a live BBC Home Service Broadcast in the late 1940s, three radio rep actors and a BBC technician use their skills, wit, ingenuity and a hundred unlikely sound effects and props to create the story of the wrecking of the SS Cabinet Minister off the Isle of Todday during WW2.
Due to rationing, the island had run short of supplies and – crucially – had run out of whisky. The unfortunate ship, on convoy to the USA, just happened to be carrying 40,000 cases of the best! The rest is history and the stuff of humorous fiction by Compton Mackenzie, as well as a triumphant Ealing Comedy by Alexander Mackendrick. |
