After studying at Edinburgh College of Art, Pat Law travelled extensively before returning to Scotland to explore the land and seascapes of the west of Scotland. She now lives in the Scottish Borders and spends the summers sailing on the west coast where she collects ‘snapshot’ studies of the light and the land, often incorporating the raw materials of sand, sea and plants into her paintings. ‘Watermarks’ was borne out of this process. Part of the work consists of a series of drawings, using the movement of the sea itself to create the images, reflecting the rhythm and mood that the sea inherently produces.
David Garrett: Although I have been involved in music for a number of years this is the first time that I have been asked to do something for such a specific event.I was immediately interested in the idea as soon as I met Pat and saw her pictures which I found extremely evocative and inspiring. I was drawn to the challenge of creating music which would complement the pictures, but not be to overpowering. The pictures are naturally so strong in mood that it was comparatively easy to generate ideas in sound that would complementand hopefully not detract from the images. Hopefully the pictures, music and words to be used in the exhibition will create an evocative blend of elements that is both subtle and powerful enough to trigger a rich response in the mind of the viewer.
Continuing our scheme of partnering exhibitions with local businesses and groups, this exhibition is sponsored by the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust. |
