Treasure Island is a juxtaposition of photographs depicting scenes within the workspaces of the local garages with sound recordings of their experiences, ideas and beliefs with regards to modernity and tradition.
During his commissioned residency, the artist Dinu Li was moved by the quality of the relationships between the islanders and sought to convey the sense of tenderness and wonder of the island.
Dinu spent his residency travelling around the island, investigating local narratives by speaking with the garage mechanics as well as anybody else that wanted to. He gained both an insight into the changing roles of the car mechanics in contemporary Mull as well as the multi-layered personalities of the local inhabitants.
His installation communicates the individual stories and personal histories of the mechanics. Capturing the compelling spirit of the island- the unique loyalty of the residents towards each other and their environment. |
