He was christened at Creich, near Fionnphort, and has spent a large chunk of his life at nearby Tormore, in the cottage bought by his grandfather (the painter and boat-builder William Caldwell Crawford) in the 1920s.

He studied art at Duncan of Jordanstone Art College in Dundee, graduating in 1983. Since then he has worked as an artist in Denmark, and Scotland, and now lives in Edinburgh.

The landscapes and tidal seascapes of Mull have been one of his main sources of inspiration. The boat fragment exhibited here, and which features in the Tide / Edit series of photographs, has a direct connection with An Tobar. It is part of the original boat modelled in the Argo sculpture outside An Tobar, which belonged to the late Bob McClelland of Fionnphort.

David Faithfull led an inspiring workshop on the Ross of Mull which is pictured, above. A sou' westerly gale and occasional rain only added to the drama of the day and the resulting work became part of the exhibition in the Gallery at An Tobar.
