Description of work Unique pieces of jewellery made using dichroic glass. All the pieces are hand made and shaped fusing the glass in a specialist kiln. Due to the processes used in manufacture, no two pieces are ever quite the same.
Dichroic glass was originally developed for the space industry, for use by NASA. Thin layers of rare metallic oxides are vaporised and deposited on the surface of the glass, in a high temperature vacuum furnace. These coatings transmit certain wavelengths of light, while reflecting others, which provides the varied and often dramatic colour changes.
Artist's statement Whilst my formal training was in fine art and I continue to make figurative stone sculpture, I have always been interested in decorative crafts and have been making jewellery and hand knotted rugs for the last few years. I work from my home on Mull and sell my work through small galleries in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and New York.
