Artist’s Statement
I have never formally trained as an artist (although I was offered a place at art school twenty years ago). Instead, after moving to Glasgow, I joined the communist party full time, left, then worked for the next fifteen years, mainly in the city (also on Shetland and Iona) – secretary; decorator; copywriter; visualizer; odd job woman; van driver; telephone salesperson; cleaner; cook; fish processor; Higher English tutor…always painting and drawing in my spare time for friends and relatives, being offered occasional commissions by word of mouth from restaurants, businesses and individuals. Then decided to go to university.
Qualifications:
MA Hons (1st class) Scottish Literature/Theology, University of Glasgow (mature student), 1999. MPhil by research: The nature of Christian identity in the fiction of George MacDonald, 2000. Also began painting more intensely, while writing the thesis.
Finally began to work full time as an artist in March 2007 with the help of a Highlands and Islands grant, two years after moving to Mull with my husband. The work is changing too quickly to describe, since beginning to work at it full time. I’m probably at first year art school stage, and only just beginning to experiment with different materials.
