Description of work Silversmith. Large pieces and a range of precious and semi-precious jewellery.
Personal history/training Eleanor MacDougall's silversmithing workshop is situated one mile from Fionnphort on the main road (849) and overlooking Loch Poit na h-ì. Eleanor has worked on the Ross of Mull for almost 20 years and many of her designs are inspired by the natural forms and colours in the surrounding landscapes. She studied silversmithing at Glasgow School of Art and following a post-graduate year there stayed for a time, working on a freelance basis within the Art School. She was involved in the Trusthouse Forte Silverware Design Project and produced six silver tumbler cups and a water jug for use in the Glasgow City Chambers.
Artist's statement Eleanor enjoys working with precious and semi-precious metals and uses both gold and silver and a range of copper alloys in her bowls and tumbler cups. These are individually 'hand-raised', each one being beaten from a flat disc into a three-dimensional form. This traditional technique is labour-intensive (and noisy!) and involves many workings or courses' of the metal, before the final form is achieved. She also uses enamels, both in jewellery and in larger pieces, and likes to capture the colours and patterns in sea, sky and landscape.
