Alexandra James
Alexandra James uses natural materials (mainly willow) to create baskets both traditional and sculptural, often combining other woods like cherry and hazel and plants that are both colourful and flexible. She also builds living willow structures which are commissioned by schools, environmental agencies, corporations and private individuals and has built up a reputation for creating life size and giant figurative sculptures which have been used for private gardens, carnival celebrations, RHS flower shows and Britain in Bloom competitions.
Other work includes commemorative crosses, Christmas Angels, Stars, wreaths plus workshops teaching adults, children and special needs groups, talks, demonstrations and craft events.
Alex holds a BA Honours Degree Fine Art, Liverpool Polytechnic 1992, a PGCE Art & Design John Moores University 1996 and an NVQ Level 2 Environmental Conservation St. Helens College 2006. She has had no formal training in willow weaving but was employed by Projects Environment (Littoral) as part of a team and taught how to create living willow structures and also had the good fortune to work with a master basket maker Derek Noble for two years making willow coffins.
