All things Goldsworthy
The main gallery space is currently hosting a show of new work from renowned land artist Andy Goldsworthy. The show comes to us from Taigh Chearsabhagh arts centre on North Uist where Goldsworthy undertook a short residency last spring. Working in his trademark style using found natural materials to create temporary sculptural objets, the photographic series here document the slow decay of these fragile works in an expansive hebridean landscape. Goldsworthy is a rare thing: a genuinely popular artist, and a rural artist at that, and this has proved to be a popular show here. It's on until the 27 June, and we have some beautiful books for sale if you would like to take a bit of the exhibition home!
Our exhibition event featured the acclaimed documentary film Rivers and Tides by Thomas Riedelsheimer, made in 2001. This was a visually rich (accompanied by a complex and beautiful soundscape) film, which showed the huge amount toil, risk and not a little frustration that goes into producing his deceptively simple art. Without giving anything away, for the audience, there were moments of cliffhanging suspense and tension more akin to a thriller than a art documentary. If you are a fan of his work, this comes highly recommended.
We also still have some spaces left on the exhibition workshop, with Veronica Slater, details of which are available here .

Looking ahead to next month, we are putting the finishing touches to our first Homecoming month of the year - with another to follow later in the season. The theme for live music programme is Tobermory Miniatures - and features some massive names in the Scottish music world in some very small places - not least our wee performance space at AN TOBAR, which can only squeeze in around 60 people. This programme offers a fantastic opportunity to experience some powerful music making up close. Two particular highlights of the month are Karen Matheson - the voice of Capercaillie, on Tuesday 2 June and Dougie MacLean (the voice of Caledonia and many more) on Tuesday 23 June. Tickets for these events will be strictly limited, and will go on sale at 10am on Wedneday 20 May. Tickets are only available online or in person at AN TOBAR
April 2009
Catching up - it's been a busy month of gigs, exhibitions, workshops and events!
For two weeks this month, Glasgow based artist Alan Cesarano undertook a short development residency. Examples of his work from Mull will be available to view on his website at www.alancesarano.com. As part of his residency, Alan also led two animation workshops – the results of which can also be seen at http://www.alancesarano.com/animation1.html and http://www.alancesarano.com/animation2.html
