Gerry McGowan's paintings are figurative in nature with a focus on social behaviour and activity. The artist is a keen observer of people at shopping centres, on the streets, and at weddings - in fact wherever people gather. His paintings show the paraphernalia of current times - baseball caps, plastic bags, mobile phones, I-pods. In depicting these he records how people conduct their daily lives and fill their leisure time. Some of his works are hung in a deliberately random fashion to reflect the random nature of the activity of the subjects.
His latest series of paintings entitled Trip to an Island (Mull) has been especially created for this exhibition based on his observations on a recent journey from Glenuig to Tobermory via the Kilhoan Ferry. In the series of paintings entitled Wedding, Salamanan Beach ,Gerry who has been a frequent visitor to Glenuig for many years, draws on the imagery of as local beach wedding.
Gerry McGowan trained at Glasgow School of Art and has exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and the USA.
